Bolsonaro has been taken into custody after authorities determined he posed a definite escape threat while under house arrest.

The one-time leader was sentenced of orchestrating a government overthrow in last fall and given more than over two decades in incarceration, but he remained under confinement pending legal challenges.

High Court Judge the presiding justice said the decision to arrest the septuagenarian politician was a precautionary step after fresh information came to light.

This included attempting to break his tracking device and a invitation to a public vigil that could facilitate a chance to flee".

Court Filing Details Escape Concerns

In a filing authorising the custody, the judge said data from the centre monitoring the former president's confinement suggested the one-time head of state's plan to remove the surveillance device to ensure success in his escape.

This, it said, would be assisted by the chaos caused by the gathering called by his child.

His son, his son Flávio, who serves as a senator, called for a gathering of his supporters near his father's house to take place on the weekend.

Flávio Bolsonaro wrote on digital networks on Friday: Will you battle for your nation, or see it all from your smartphone there on your sofa? I call on you to battle with us."

He said the demonstration would be so supporters could "pray for his health and for the restoration of democratic rule in our land."

Diplomatic Refuge Fears

Details of Guilty Verdict

Bolsonaro was found guilty of leading a scheme aimed at retaining his authority after he was defeated in the 2022 election to his political opponent, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva.

Top judicial officials said that he knew of a plot which encompassed plans to murder Lula and his VP candidate, his vice-presidential candidate, and to detain and kill Justice Moraes - the High Court judge who has been managing Bolsonaro's trial.

The plot was stopped because it failed to get the endorsement of the army and air force commanders. Lula was sworn in without incident on the first day of 2023.

But a seven days after, on 8 January, thousands of his followers attacked and damaged government buildings in the federal district, Brazil's capital.

The law enforcement stepped in and around approximately 1,500 persons were taken into custody.

The magistrates found that the demonstrators had been incited by the former president whose plan, they said, was for the national armed forces to step in, restore order and reinstate his authority.

At the time, Bolsonaro's lawyers called the decades-long sentence extremely harsh.
