EU Could Retaliate to ‘Unjustified’ US Travel Restrictions, Spokesperson States
The EU might “act quickly and firmly” against what it deems “unwarranted” visa bans imposed by the United States against five European individuals working on combating digital hatred and misinformation, a European Commission spokesperson has said.
EU Officials Decry US Action as ‘Coercion’
Officials from Europe such as the French president accused the US administration of “bullying and threats”, after the visa restrictions were placed on figures that were central to campaigns to introduce legislation regulating US-based technology firms.
“For too long, European activists have spearheaded organised efforts to pressure US companies to suppress US perspectives they oppose,” wrote a senior US official in a social media post. “The current administration will not stand for these egregious acts of censorship beyond its borders.”
Broad Criticism Across Europe
Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials joined France in criticizing the decision.
The restrictions were enacted this week on an ex-European commissioner who helped draft the EU’s Digital Services Act (DSA), along with several anti-disinformation campaigners, from two in Germany and two in the UK.
A Deepening Dispute Regarding Governance
The DSA is viewed by US officials as a form of censorship, while European leaders argue the regulations are essential to control inflammatory language and falsehoods.
This disagreement risks becoming part of a much broader ongoing political and ideological clash between Washington and European institutions.
